Aston Villa have moved to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, thwarting a deal that Newcastle United had previously agreed in principle, according to TEAMtalk. The 20-year-old Swiss international had emerged as a key target for both Premier League clubs, but Villa have successfully negotiated an agreement with both Freiburg and Manzambi’s representatives.
Newcastle had reportedly reached a €60million (£51.1m) agreement with Freiburg last week, however, progress in negotiations with Manzambi’s camp stalled, creating an opening for Villa. This mirrors a similar situation earlier in the summer when Liverpool successfully intervened in Newcastle’s pursuit of Victor Munoz.
Manzambi impressed Aston Villa during Freiburg’s Europa League campaign against Unai Emery’s side, and the Villa manager personally assessed the player before sanctioning a move. Emery has a track record of successful recruitment based on personal scouting, as demonstrated with the signing of Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough.
TEAMtalk reports that Manzambi’s versatility, athleticism, and technical ability align with Emery’s plans for his midfield. Villa sources have clarified that the move for Manzambi is not dependent on the potential departure of Rogers, and the player was identified as a target independently.
For Newcastle, this represents a setback in their summer transfer business, though they were aware of Villa’s continued interest throughout the process. The club will now refocus their efforts on alternative midfield targets as Eddie Howe looks to reshape his squad. Manzambi’s performances at the recent World Cup had further enhanced his reputation, making him a highly sought-after prospect.
Aston Villa’s successful capture of Manzambi is seen as a significant coup, bringing in a player considered one of European football’s most exciting young midfield talents. The move strengthens Villa’s midfield options ahead of the new Premier League season and demonstrates Emery’s proactive approach to squad building.
