Aston Villa are in discussions with Bayern Munich regarding a potential move for midfielder João Palhinha, according to multiple reports. The 31-year-old Portuguese international is the subject of ongoing negotiations, with Villa considering both a permanent transfer and a loan deal. Fabrizio Romano reports that manager Unai Emery and the club’s hierarchy are currently evaluating whether to submit a formal offer for the player.
Palhinha spent the recent season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, making 35 appearances across all competitions and establishing himself as a key player in midfield. While he impressed during his time in North London, a permanent move to Spurs did not materialize. He remains under contract with Bayern Munich until 2028, but the German club are reportedly open to his departure. Initial reports from Romano indicated no talks had taken place with Bayern, but this has since evolved into active discussions.
Aston Villa, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season and secured a Champions League spot, are seeking to bolster their midfield options ahead of a demanding campaign. The Athletic reports that Villa are exploring the possibility of a loan move for Palhinha, while Teamtalk suggests the club are prioritizing a permanent transfer. A fee of around €23.5 million has been mentioned as a potential valuation that would be agreeable to Bayern Munich.
Benfica, Palhinha’s former club, had also expressed interest in re-signing the player, but those efforts appear to be faltering due to the financial implications of the deal. The overall cost of the transfer package is proving to be a significant obstacle for the Portuguese side. Palhinha previously played for Sporting CP and Braga in Portugal before moving to Germany. His combative style and defensive capabilities would likely add steel to Villa’s midfield.
Should Villa secure a deal for Palhinha, it would provide Emery with another experienced option in a crucial position, strengthening their squad depth for both domestic and European competition. The move would also offer Palhinha the opportunity to remain in the Premier League and continue his career progression.
