Atletico Madrid are in advanced talks to sign Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of around €45 million, according to reports from Ben Jacobs. The move comes as Atletico seemingly shift their focus after losing ground in the pursuit of Atalanta’s Ederson dos Santos, with Manchester United now poised to secure his signature.
Atletico Sporting Director Mateu Alemany had identified midfield reinforcement as a priority following the departure of Conor Gallagher earlier in the season, bringing in Rodrigo Mendoza and Obed Vargas as longer-term projects in January. Both Ederson and Gomes were linked with moves to the Spanish capital during the winter transfer window, but a deal for either failed to materialize at the time.
Jacobs reports that discussions between Atletico and Wolves are nearing a verbal agreement, though personal terms with Gomes are still to be finalized. The 25-year-old Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 for a reported €15 million and has established himself as a regular starter in the Premier League, earning 10 caps for the Brazilian national team, most recently in 2024.
Wolves are set to realize a significant profit on Gomes, tripling their initial investment. At Atletico, he would compete for a place in midfield alongside Pablo Barrios, Koke Resurreccion, and Johnny Cardoso. The potential arrival of Gomes suggests Atletico are preparing for potential changes in their midfield ahead of next season, and adds further quality to Diego Simeone’s squad. This move could allow Atletico to maintain their competitive edge in La Liga and continue their challenge in European competitions.
