Atletico Madrid have entered the race to sign Liverpool defender Andy Robertson on a free transfer this summer, challenging a prior agreement the player has with Tottenham Hotspur. According to a report from The Daily Record, Atletico manager Diego Simeone has personally instructed the club's hierarchy to pursue the 32-year-old Scottish left-back, whose contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season.
Robertson had already reached a full agreement on personal terms with Tottenham, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. That proposed move, however, is contingent on Spurs retaining their Premier League status, with the club currently sitting in 18th place in the table. The Athletic has reported that Tottenham value the leadership and experience Robertson would bring to a relatively young squad.
The late interest from the Spanish capital introduces a significant complication. Simeone's stature at Atletico Madrid means his transfer requests are typically acted upon, and the club is now attempting to convince Robertson to choose a move to La Liga over remaining in England. Simeone has a history of successfully integrating British full-backs, having previously coached Kieran Trippier during his time at Atletico before the defender's return to Newcastle United.
Robertson's potential fit at Atletico is considered strong, with his tenacious playing style seen as complementary to Simeone's renowned defensive and high-intensity philosophy. The major hurdle for the Spanish club will be persuading the player, who has a young family settled in England, to relocate abroad at this stage of his career. The Daily Record notes that Robertson may be reluctant to make such a move.
The defender is leaving Liverpool after nine seasons, having established himself as one of the world's premier left-backs during his peak years at Anfield. With new Liverpool manager Arne Slot favouring Milos Kerkez in the position this season, a departure was deemed necessary. Robertson still believes he can be a regular starter at a high level.
Scottish champions Celtic, where Robertson began his youth career, have also been linked with a move but are considered outsiders with clubs of Tottenham and Atletico's stature involved. The coming weeks will determine whether Robertson's future lies in North London, Madrid, or elsewhere, with his next destination likely to be decided once the Premier League season concludes and Tottenham's fate is known.
