Atlético Madrid are in advanced negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of left-back Alejandro Grimaldo, according to Mundo Deportivo. The Spanish club have reportedly offered the player a contract extending until 2029, with an additional option for a further year.
Grimaldo has expressed a desire to return to Spain, making Atlético an attractive destination. The move comes after Marc Cucurella joined Real Madrid, creating a clear need for reinforcement at left-back for Diego Simeone’s side. Atlético are actively seeking to strengthen that position during the current transfer window.
Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly open to selling Grimaldo, with the player’s contract at the BayArena set to expire in 2027. This summer represents the last opportunity for Leverkusen to secure a significant transfer fee for the 28-year-old, who arrived on a free transfer from Benfica in 2023. Leverkusen are believed to be demanding a fee of at least €10 million for their vice-captain.
Since joining Leverkusen, Grimaldo has established himself as a key player, contributing significantly with both his defensive work and his set-piece delivery. He has consistently featured for Xabi Alonso’s side, playing a vital role in their recent Bundesliga title win. Prior to his move to Germany, Grimaldo spent six years with Benfica, winning multiple league titles and gaining Champions League experience.
The potential arrival of Grimaldo would provide Atlético with a proven and experienced left-back, capable of contributing both defensively and in attack. The transfer would further solidify Atlético’s squad as they prepare to challenge for domestic and European honours next season.
