Atletico Madrid have initiated discussions with Manchester City regarding a potential transfer for Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, according to reports from RadioMarca. The move comes as Atletico Sporting Director Mateu Alemany seeks to bolster the team’s midfield options ahead of the upcoming season, having already secured an agreement to sign Joao Gomes from Wolves.
Atletico’s midfield underwent significant changes last summer with the arrivals of Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso, though both players struggled to establish themselves due to injury setbacks. Veteran captain Koke Resurreccion remained a key figure, while Pablo Barrios also faced fitness challenges. January additions Obed Vargas and Rodrigo Mendoza were brought in with a longer-term development focus, potentially opening the door for loan moves this summer.
Reijnders joined Manchester City last year for a reported €54.9 million following a successful two-year spell with AC Milan. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, the 27-year-old made 47 appearances across all competitions, contributing seven goals and eight assists. However, he often found himself as a substitute under Pep Guardiola, starting roughly half of his matches, particularly towards the end of the season. Despite this, Reijnders maintained a strong goal contribution rate, averaging almost one goal or assist every two games.
The arrival of Enzo Maresca as Manchester City’s new manager could lead to a reshuffling of the squad, with Reijnders identified as a potential departure. Atletico view Reijnders as a profile similar to Pablo Barrios, possessing both technical ability and the capacity to drive forward from midfield. Prior to his move to City, Reijnders had also attracted interest from Real Madrid, highlighting his reputation as a dynamic midfielder.
Securing Reijnders would further strengthen Atletico’s midfield depth, providing competition and quality alongside Gomes, Baena, Cardoso, and Koke. The potential addition of a player in his prime years could be crucial as Atletico aims to challenge for domestic and European honours.
