Atlético Madrid are poised to make a move for Olympique de Marseille forward Mason Greenwood, with the French club seeking €50 million for the player, according to L’Équipe. Marseille are reportedly looking to generate funds this summer and Greenwood, their leading goalscorer, is identified as a potential major sale.
Greenwood joined Marseille on a season-long loan from Manchester United in September 2023, and quickly established himself as a key player, scoring 12 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions. The 22-year-old’s form helped Marseille secure a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1, qualifying them for the UEFA Europa League. Despite a successful spell, Marseille are under pressure to balance their finances and a permanent sale appears likely.
Manchester United still retain a 40% economic interest in Greenwood, meaning they would be due a portion of any transfer fee. The situation is complex, with Atlético having already made initial inquiries with both Marseille and United regarding the player’s availability. Diego Simeone, the Atlético manager, views Greenwood as a potential solution to bolster his attacking options.
The potential departure of Julian Alvarez has reportedly influenced Simeone’s interest in Greenwood. Alvarez recently hinted at a possible exit from the club, leaving Atlético potentially short of attacking firepower. Greenwood’s ability to finish chances aligns with Simeone’s tactical preferences and could make him a valuable addition to the squad.
However, Atlético are not the only club monitoring Greenwood’s situation. Fenerbahçe of Turkey and Serie A side AS Roma are also reportedly interested in acquiring the England international. Competition for Greenwood’s signature could potentially drive up the transfer fee, benefiting both Marseille and Manchester United. A move to Atlético would see Greenwood compete in the Champions League, offering a step up in competition compared to the Europa League with Marseille.
