Auxerre are set to sign Christ Makosso from RWDM, the Ligue 1 club confirmed on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Congolese defender will join the Burgundy-based side on a four-year contract as Auxerre manager Will Still looks to reshape his squad. Makosso has five international caps for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Makosso developed through the youth ranks at Sochaux before moving to RWDM in Belgium in January 2024. He spent the latter part of 2024 and the first half of 2025 on loan at Oxford United in the English Championship. Despite Oxford’s subsequent relegation to League One at the end of the 2025 season, Makosso gained valuable experience in a competitive league.
The centre-back, who stands at 1.92m tall, is described as a physically imposing player. Auxerre have been actively seeking to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the upcoming season, and Still identified Makosso as a key target. The club is aiming to streamline its squad and believes Makosso will be a valuable addition.
Financial details of the transfer have not been disclosed by either club. However, given Makosso’s age and potential, the move represents a significant investment for Auxerre. The signing provides competition in central defence and offers Still another tactical option as he builds his team. This transfer could prove pivotal in Auxerre’s efforts to establish themselves as a consistent force in Ligue 1.
