Olympique de Marseille vice-captain Leonardo Balerdi turned down a transfer offer from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this year, according to L’Équipe. The German club reportedly submitted a bid of €25 million, plus potential bonuses, for the Argentinian defender.
The rejection comes as Marseille faces scrutiny from the DNCG, the financial regulatory body of French football, due to ongoing economic difficulties. The club is expected to be subject to salary cap restrictions following the audit, and the board had hoped to generate funds through player sales. However, Balerdi’s unwillingness to return to Germany has complicated those plans.
Balerdi previously played for Borussia Dortmund for a season and a half, but was reportedly not keen on another spell in the Bundesliga. The timing of a potential move was also unfavorable, as he suffered a calf injury shortly before the World Cup, potentially impacting his market value. Marseille officials, Grégory Lorenzi and Stéphane Richard, may now find it difficult to negotiate a higher fee for the player.
Balerdi has made 200 appearances for Marseille since joining the club, becoming a key figure in the team’s defense. His commitment to the club, despite financial instability and potential offers from elsewhere, suggests a strong connection to the project. The situation highlights the challenges Marseille faces in balancing its books and maintaining a competitive squad. The club narrowly avoided exclusion from the Europa League, but received a severe warning from UEFA regarding its financial situation.
The financial pressures at Marseille are also impacting club leadership, with the city’s mayor expressing dissatisfaction with the team’s performance and demanding improvement. This transfer situation, and others like it, will be crucial in determining Marseille’s ability to navigate its financial difficulties and compete effectively in Ligue 1 and European competitions.
