Chelsea are among the clubs vying for the signature of AS Monaco forward Folarin Balogun, and the United States international is reportedly facing a clear choice regarding his future.
Balogun recently experienced a difficult World Cup, becoming embroiled in controversy after receiving a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina during the round of 32. The one-match suspension for the subsequent round of 16 match against Belgium was lifted following intervention from former US president Donald Trump, but Balogun has since admitted the incident negatively impacted the team’s performance, ultimately leading to their elimination.
Having previously progressed through the Arsenal academy, Balogun currently plays for Monaco, who are now said to be open to offers for the 25-year-old. This has prompted interest from several clubs, including Chelsea and Juventus, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, with the latter also considering options due to the uncertain future of Jonathan David.
Interestingly, Balogun found himself in a similar situation in 2023 when departing Arsenal, choosing Monaco over Chelsea and describing that decision as “easy.” Now, three years later, a similar scenario has presented itself. However, analysis from SciSports suggests a move to Chelsea would be detrimental to Balogun’s career.
SciSports, a data analytics firm, assesses potential transfers based on factors like playing time, development opportunities, and stylistic fit, assigning a ‘Club Fit’ rating. Chelsea received a rating of just 48 out of 100 for Balogun, performing poorly across multiple categories. Juventus fared better with a score of 70, but Crystal Palace and AS Roma, with ratings of 82 and 80 respectively, are considered more suitable destinations. While Manchester City also aligns stylistically, Balogun would likely struggle for consistent minutes behind Erling Haaland. Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have also emerged as potential options for the American forward.
Balogun’s next move remains uncertain, but data suggests he should avoid a return to the Premier League with Chelsea.
