Barcelona face decision on Marcus Rashford permanent deal amid summer transfer plans
Barcelona are reluctant to pay the agreed €30 million fee to make Marcus Rashford's loan from Manchester United permanent, according to a report from FootballTransfers. The 28-year-old English forward has spent the current season on loan at the Catalan club, where his attitude and performances are said to have impressed the coaching staff.
The option to buy was established as part of the initial loan agreement, but Barcelona's ongoing financial constraints have led them to seek a discount on the stipulated amount. Manchester United, however, have no desire to renegotiate the fee or sanction another loan deal, placing the permanent transfer in jeopardy. Rashford himself is reportedly keen to extend his stay with the La Liga champions.
Should Barcelona ultimately decide against meeting United's valuation for Rashford, the club is expected to explore a cheaper alternative. Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli, a former Barcelona academy product, could be re-signed for a reported €20 million due to a buy-back clause inserted in his 2023 sale. The 24-year-old has been a key performer for Betis, prompting internal debate over whether he represents a more financially viable option.
The situation forms part of a broader summer strategy for Barcelona, who are aiming for at least one marquee signing despite their well-documented economic challenges. The club has frequently relied on free transfers and loans in recent windows to navigate their salary cap limitations, but there is optimism that some funds can be freed for targeted investments.
In other areas of the squad, Barcelona are reportedly progressing in their pursuit of Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. Talks with the player's representatives are said to be ongoing, although negotiations with Inter over a transfer fee have not yet begun. Barcelona are believed to be preparing an offer of around €50 million, while the Italian club values the left-sided centre-back closer to €60-70 million.
Further up the pitch, the club's primary target is reported to be Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick views the Argentine international as the long-term successor to veteran Robert Lewandowski. However, Atletico are not considered willing sellers and would likely demand a fee in the region of €100 million, a figure that would test Barcelona's financial resolve, especially with Arsenal also monitoring the situation.
Defensive reinforcements are also being considered, with Chelsea's Marc Cucurella mentioned as a potential target. The Spanish left-back, another product of La Masia, admitted in March that it would be difficult to turn down a return to his boyhood club. Chelsea see him as a key player and are not actively looking to sell, but the report suggests a deal could become feasible if the London club fails to qualify for next season's Champions League.
The coming months will be crucial for Barcelona's sporting directorate as they balance their ambitious targets with a complex financial reality. The decision on Rashford's future will be an early indicator of their spending power and strategic priorities for the upcoming transfer window.
