FC Barcelona have overtaken Bayern Munich as the frontrunners to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, according to a report in Mundo Deportivo. The development comes despite previous reports suggesting Bayern were close to agreeing terms with both the player and Newcastle.
Bayern Munich had been heavily linked with a move for Gordon, with claims of a pre-agreement with the winger and ongoing negotiations with Newcastle regarding a transfer fee. However, the Spanish publication states that Gordon now favours a move to the Catalan club and is attracted by Barcelona’s sporting project.
Barcelona sporting director Deco is reported to have begun discussions with Newcastle officials, simultaneously working to persuade Gordon to choose a move to the Camp Nou. The 22-year-old has shown promise in the Premier League, scoring eight goals in 34 appearances for Newcastle last season, becoming a key player under Eddie Howe after joining from Everton in January 2023.
The primary obstacle to any deal remains Newcastle’s valuation of Gordon, which is reported to be around €80 million. Both Barcelona and Bayern consider this price tag excessive, presenting a significant hurdle in negotiations. Barcelona’s financial situation, well-documented in recent years, further complicates their ability to meet Newcastle’s demands.
Gordon’s versatility, capable of playing on either wing or as a centre-forward, makes him an attractive prospect for top clubs across Europe. His arrival at Barcelona would provide competition and depth in their attacking options, potentially allowing manager Xavi Hernández greater tactical flexibility. Should Gordon complete a move to Barcelona, it could signal a shift in their attacking strategy and further solidify their ambitions in La Liga and the Champions League.
