FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has stated the club will not indefinitely pursue Atlético Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, setting a timeframe for a response to their formal offer. Speaking in Dallas while attending the World Cup semi-final between France and Spain, Laporta confirmed Barcelona’s bid for the Argentinian international but cautioned that their patience is not unlimited.
Laporta emphasized Barcelona’s position in negotiations, stating, “Obviously, we are not going to dance to anyone’s tune, we will set the rhythm.” He confirmed a formal offer has been submitted, but declined to disclose the specific amount, noting it reflects the club’s strong desire to secure Alvarez’s services despite also being linked with a move for German forward Karim Adeyemi. Laporta described Alvarez as “a very great player” who is highly regarded by both the sporting director and the head coach, justifying what he described as a “significant offer.”
Despite recent tensions between the two clubs, Laporta asserted he maintains a good relationship with Atlético Madrid’s leadership, specifically mentioning a conversation with director general Miguel Angel Gil. He indicated an initial misunderstanding regarding Barcelona’s offer had been clarified, and that the club has not applied additional pressure. Barcelona has communicated that their offer remains valid until Atlético Madrid identifies a suitable replacement for Alvarez.
Alvarez publicly expressed his desire to leave Atlético Madrid during the recent World Cup tournament in Qatar. The 22-year-old scored in Argentina’s quarter-final victory over Switzerland, and remains a key target for Barcelona as they look to strengthen their attacking options. Alvarez previously played for Manchester City before joining Atlético Madrid, where he has continued to develop as a dynamic forward.
The situation presents Barcelona with a challenge as they balance their pursuit of Alvarez with other potential signings, including Adeyemi. A successful acquisition of Alvarez would provide a significant boost to Barcelona’s attacking line, offering competition and versatility. However, Atlético Madrid’s willingness to sell and find a replacement will be crucial in determining the outcome of this transfer saga.
