Barcelona have completed the signing of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon for a reported €80 million, according to FootballTransfers. The transfer window is officially open for clubs in the Premier League and Serie A, with several deals already announced as of June 29th.
Gordon, 23, joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for a fee of £40 million. He made 34 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists. While he showed promise at St. James’ Park, the offer from Barcelona proved too significant for Newcastle to refuse.
Real Madrid have also been active in the transfer market, securing Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella for €55 million. They have also added Bernardo Silva from Manchester City and Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool on free transfers, bolstering their midfield and defensive options. An agreement is in place to sign Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries, and they are reportedly pursuing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
In the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur have been the busiest club, bringing in Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for €60 million, alongside free signings Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka. Liverpool have replaced Konate with Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais, a transfer agreed during the winter window for a fee of €63.6m. Chelsea have also been active, signing Geovany Quenda, Denner, Dastan Satpaev and Emmanuel Emegha, with Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco expected to follow from Atalanta and Strasbourg respectively.
Elsewhere, Leeds United are nearing the arrival of Harry Wilson from Fulham on a free transfer, and Manchester City are poised to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a club-record fee. Yan Diomande is reportedly set to choose Paris Saint-Germain over a move to Liverpool. A loan deal has been completed for Ben Godfrey, moving from Atalanta to Rangers.
The opening days of the transfer window indicate a willingness from top European clubs to invest heavily in squad improvements ahead of the upcoming season. Barcelona's acquisition of Gordon represents a significant statement of intent as they aim to compete at the highest level.
