Barcelona have officially signed forward Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal worth €70 million plus a potential €10 million in add-ons, the club confirmed on Wednesday. The 22-year-old has signed a contract with the Catalan giants, though the length of the deal was not disclosed. Gordon’s transfer represents Barcelona’s first major signing of the summer transfer window.
Gordon joins Barcelona after a season and a half with Newcastle, where he established himself as a key player under Eddie Howe. He arrived at St. James’ Park in January 2023 from Everton for a reported £40 million, and quickly became a fan favorite with his energetic performances and direct running. Last season, Gordon made 34 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, scoring six goals and providing seven assists, contributing to their Champions League qualification.
The move to Barcelona has been a long-held ambition for Gordon, who reportedly learned Spanish with the hope of one day playing for the club. Speaking at his unveiling, Gordon revealed he had been practicing Spanish with a Spanish physiotherapist at Newcastle, motivated by his dream of joining the Catalan side. He expressed his delight at achieving this goal, stating it was “his dream” to play for Barcelona.
Barcelona are undergoing a period of rebuilding under manager Deco, aiming to establish a new generation of talent capable of challenging for major honors. The acquisition of Gordon is seen as a significant step in that process, adding pace, skill, and goal threat to their attacking options. The club finished the recently completed La Liga season without silverware, and will be hoping to improve on that next season. This signing signals Barcelona’s intent to compete at the highest level and strengthen their squad ahead of the next campaign.
