Barcelona's Interest in Inter's Alessandro Bastoni Faces Significant Hurdles
Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni is the subject of serious interest from La Liga leaders FC Barcelona, but a potential summer transfer faces major financial and sporting obstacles. According to reports from Catalonia, notably from the Barcelona-leaning publication Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish champions-elect hold a genuine admiration for the 24-year-old Italian international. However, Inter's management, led by CEO Giuseppe Marotta, has made it clear the player is not for sale unless an exceptional offer arrives or Bastoni himself pushes for a move.
The situation presents a complex dilemma for all parties. Bastoni is understood to be flattered by the interest from Barcelona, a club capable of offering a new global challenge. Yet, sources close to the player indicate he has no current intention of requesting a transfer from Inter, the club where he has developed into a cornerstone of their defence under Simone Inzaghi. His emotional connection was evident recently when he received a standing ovation from the San Siro crowd upon being substituted against Roma, a moment shared with former Inter defenders Cristian Chivu and Aleksandar Kolarov.
Financially, the clubs appear far apart. Reports from Spain suggesting a valuation around 50 million euros are said to have been met with disbelief by Inter's hierarchy. The Nerazzurri consider Bastoni a fundamental piece of their present and future, and a symbol of their recent trophy-winning cycle. It is believed it would take a concrete offer in the region of 70 million euros, or at least 60 million plus easily achievable bonuses, for Inter to even consider sitting down at the negotiating table.
Bastoni's recent history adds another layer. The defender has faced persistent whistles from opposition fans in away stadiums in Italy, largely linked to his perceived role in Italy's failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. This ongoing hostility could become a psychological factor, potentially influencing his desire for a fresh start abroad. In the past, Bastoni has rebuffed advances from other suitors, including Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and lucrative proposals from the Saudi Pro League, demonstrating his prior commitment to Inter.
The coming months will be decisive. How Inter's season concludes and whether the negative atmosphere around the player persists could push him to seek a change. Conversely, if the situation stabilizes, Bastoni could reaffirm his status as a future captain at San Siro. For now, Barcelona's interest is real, but any move would require the Catalan club to table a monumental offer and for Bastoni to actively decide his long-term future lies away from Milan.
