Bayern Munich have agreed to extend the loan of midfielder Javier Fernández to 1.FC Nürnberg for the 2024-25 season, the clubs confirmed on Thursday, June 13th. The Spanish youth international will continue his development in the 2.Bundesliga under manager Miroslav Klose, gaining valuable first-team experience.
Fernández initially joined Nürnberg on loan during the latter half of the 2023-24 campaign, making eight appearances and providing one assist. Sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou expressed Nürnberg’s satisfaction with the player’s progress, stating that Fernández has demonstrated “great potential” since arriving at the club. Chatzialexiou also revealed that extending the loan beyond the initial period was a pre-existing plan.
The 18-year-old midfielder signed a contract with Bayern Munich that runs until 2028, indicating the Bundesliga champions’ long-term belief in his abilities. Despite his youth, Fernández has already represented Spain at the Under-18 level, showcasing his potential on the international stage. Bayern are known for developing young talent and often utilize loan spells to provide opportunities for players to gain consistent playing time.
Fernández himself voiced his enthusiasm about returning to Nürnberg, highlighting his comfort within the club and the city. He emphasized the importance of regular playing time in his development, noting that he feels he is improving in multiple areas of his game. The midfielder aims to continue this upward trajectory throughout the upcoming season, focusing on further refinement of his skills.
This continued loan arrangement benefits both Bayern Munich and 1.FC Nürnberg, allowing the German giants to nurture a promising talent while providing Nürnberg with a dynamic midfielder for their promotion push. Fernández’s continued development in the 2.Bundesliga will be closely monitored by Bayern as he strives to eventually break into the first team in Munich.
