Lille have announced the appointment of Rémy Vercoutre as their new goalkeeper coach, the club confirmed on Friday. The former Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper will serve as an assistant coach focusing on developing the club’s goalkeepers.
Vercoutre previously held the same position at Lyon between 2021 and 2025, gaining experience working with professional players at a high level. This appointment comes after Lille recently named Davide Ancelotti as their new head coach, signalling a broader restructuring of the technical staff.
The 45-year-old made 240 appearances in Ligue 1 during his playing career, primarily as a backup to Gregory Coupet. Despite being a native of northern France, Vercoutre never played professionally for a club in the region before transitioning to coaching. He brings a wealth of experience and a critical eye to Lille’s goalkeeping department.
Interestingly, Vercoutre has previously been publicly critical of Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer. While working as a pundit for Ligue1+, he expressed doubts about Özer’s consistency, stating he hadn’t “seen him have a reference match” and questioning his positioning. However, he also acknowledged Özer’s composure, noting he “had a lot of cold blood.” The dynamic between coach and player will be one to watch as they work together.
Özer is currently under contract with Lille until 2029, and Vercoutre’s arrival suggests the club is committed to developing the young Turkish goalkeeper. This appointment aims to strengthen Lille’s squad ahead of the upcoming season and potentially address concerns about their defensive stability.
