Bayern Munich Make Formal Approach for Newcastle's Anthony Gordon
Bayern Munich have made a formal approach to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon this summer, according to reports from Sky Sports and BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel. The German champions have registered their interest and initiated contact with the 25-year-old's representatives, with the early discussions described as positive. The BBC indicates that Gordon himself is generally open to the prospect of a move to Bavaria, providing a significant boost to Bayern's pursuit.
The England international, who joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for an initial £40 million, has developed into a key figure at St. James' Park. His direct running, pace, and improved end product last season, which yielded 11 Premier League goals, align with the profile Bayern are seeking to bolster their left flank. The Bundesliga giants are reportedly looking for a player who can provide competition and cover for their primary option on that side while adding versatility to their attacking play.
Newcastle's position is complicated by the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules, which have forced the club to consider significant player sales this summer. According to the BBC, Gordon is among the assets the Magpies are open to moving on for the right price, despite his importance to Eddie Howe's side. However, the player is under a long-term contract until 2030 and does not possess a release clause, leaving Newcastle in a strong negotiating position.
The club's current asking price is reported to be in the region of £70 million (approximately €80 million). This figure is understood to exceed Bayern Munich's valuation, with the German club's limit believed to be closer to €60 million, a sum that aligns with Gordon's current estimated market value. The significant gap between the two clubs' valuations presents the main obstacle to a deal being completed.
Gordon's potential departure would represent a major sale for Newcastle as they seek to balance their books and potentially reinvest in other areas of the squad. For Bayern, securing his signature would mark a statement of intent in a summer where they are expected to refresh their wide attacking options under new manager Vincent Kompany. The coming weeks will determine whether the two clubs can bridge their financial differences to facilitate a transfer.
