Bayern Munich are exploring a potential transfer for Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. The 17-year-old joined Liverpool from Chelsea in 2024 and quickly made an impact, scoring a late winner against Newcastle United in August of the same year.
Despite a promising start, Ngumoha’s first-team opportunities became limited as the season progressed, even with inconsistent performances from Cody Gakpo. Liverpool had opted not to replace Luis Diaz when he moved to Bayern last summer, partly to avoid hindering Ngumoha’s development, but former manager Arne Slot did not consistently feature the young winger. A substitution against Chelsea in February, where Ngumoha was replaced after providing an assist, drew audible booes from the Anfield crowd, reflecting growing supporter frustration with Slot’s management.
Ngumoha is now a primary target for Bayern, with head coach Vincent Kompany and the club’s board driving the interest. The German club initially pursued Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, but he ultimately signed for Barcelona for a reported €80 million. Bayern are now seeking a wide player for under €60 million and are prioritizing younger players with development potential.
Liverpool have publicly stated that Ngumoha is not for sale, which presents a significant obstacle to any potential deal. The Reds may themselves look to strengthen their wide options this summer, potentially adding competition in Ngumoha’s position. Bayern are also considering PSV Eindhoven attacker Ismael Saibari as an alternative, with the player already said to be in agreement with a move to the Allianz Arena. Kompany’s desire to build a squad around young, developing talent aligns with Ngumoha’s profile, but overcoming Liverpool’s resistance will be crucial for Bayern to secure the transfer.
