Bayern smash scoring record in 5-0 win, Kompany praises team unity
Bayern Munich set a new Bundesliga scoring record in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 victory over St. Pauli, moving to the brink of the league title. The 5-0 victory at the Millerntor-Stadion, with goals from Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka, Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson, and Raphaël Guerreiro, saw the Bavarians surpass the league's single-season scoring record of 101 goals, a mark that had stood for decades.
Head coach Vincent Kompany expressed his satisfaction with the performance, particularly given the challenge St. Pauli's resolute defense has posed to other teams this season. "I am satisfied with our performance and the result," Kompany said in his post-match press conference. "St. Pauli are a team that almost always defends very well and concedes few goals. So what we did today here is not something that should be taken for granted."
The record-breaking moment came from Leon Goretzka, whose goal was Bayern's 102nd of the Bundesliga campaign. Kompany was full of praise for the midfielder's mentality. "I told the team as well: if anyone believes in his moment, it's Leon," Kompany said. "The fact that he's now broken this record... is somehow typical of him, because he always believes in himself. For me, he's a great role model for the boys."
Kompany, in his first season at the Allianz Arena, also expressed his personal pride in the achievement. "I'm absolutely delighted... It [the record] stood for so long – all the more reason to celebrate that we've finally broken it," he stated. He emphasized that a prolific attack is integral to the club's DNA, adding, "What I generally like is that our team is known for scoring goals. That's simply a part of Bayern and part of our identity."
Beyond the goals, Kompany highlighted the collective spirit within the squad as the foundation for their success, which now sees them one win from clinching the Bundesliga title. "I know it's always easier when you're winning," Kompany noted, "but we try everything to truly be a family... That gives me the feeling that maybe that's exactly why we're achieving what we're currently doing."
The record-setting victory provides a significant confidence boost ahead of a season-defining UEFA Champions League clash. Bayern now return to Munich to prepare for the second leg of their quarter-final tie against Real Madrid on Wednesday, with the aggregate score level at 2-2. The win over St. Pauli not only sets a new league benchmark but also provides ideal preparation for the European challenge ahead, with the team's attacking prowess and squad unity at a season-high peak.
