SL Benfica have expressed interest in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Equi Fernández, potentially bringing an end to the Argentine’s short spell in Germany, according to Bild. The Portuguese club are reportedly prepared to offer €20 million for the 23-year-old, who joined Leverkusen from Al Qadsiah of Saudi Arabia last year for a fee of €25 million.
Leverkusen are understood to be open to offers for Fernández, despite his arrival just one season ago. The club invested significantly in the player, but his impact during his debut campaign may not have fully justified the expenditure. He featured in 30 games across all competitions for Die Werkself, contributing a single assist.
Fernández primarily operates as a central midfielder, known for his energetic pressing and passing range. Before his move to Leverkusen, he spent the majority of his professional career in Argentina and Saudi Arabia, gaining experience in different tactical systems. His transfer to Al Qadsiah in 2022 marked his first foray into European football, before the quick move to the Bundesliga.
The reported €5 million difference in valuation between Benfica’s offer and Leverkusen’s asking price suggests a deal is potentially achievable. Negotiations could focus on add-ons or a structured payment plan to bridge the gap. Benfica are consistently active in the transfer market, seeking to strengthen their squad for both domestic and Champions League competition.
Should Fernández complete a move to Lisbon, it would represent a significant opportunity for him to establish himself in a competitive European league. Benfica’s history of developing young talent could provide a suitable environment for the Argentine to further progress his career. Leverkusen, meanwhile, would likely seek a replacement to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new season.
