Domenico Berardi has stated he would only leave Sassuolo to play in the Champions League, revealing a long-held ambition despite recently signing a contract extension with the club. The 31-year-old forward, speaking to an Italian journalist, emphasized his strong connection to Sassuolo but admitted he remains open to opportunities that would allow him to compete at the highest European level.
Berardi recently signed a new deal with Sassuolo that will keep him at the club until 2029, a commitment widely seen as a sign of his loyalty. However, he clarified that while he is happy at Sassuolo, a compelling offer from a Champions League participant could change his stance. He stressed that any potential move would need to guarantee him a significant role, stating he wants to be a “protagonist” and not a “passenger.”
The Italy international reflected on a challenging period following a 2024 Achilles tendon rupture, admitting he considered retirement. He credited his wife, Francesca, and the club’s medical staff with helping him overcome the mental and physical hurdles of rehabilitation, ultimately returning to form. Berardi scored eight goals and provided five assists this past season despite missing a portion of the campaign due to injury.
Berardi also expressed his admiration for current Sassuolo teammate Nemanja Matic, describing him as an exceptional player and a man of great values. He lamented a perceived shift in Serie A towards a more tactical and results-oriented approach, contrasting it with the more fluid and enjoyable style of play under former coach Roberto De Zerbi. He feels the current league lacks the creativity and freedom he experienced under De Zerbi’s guidance, describing the current landscape as filled with “soldiers” rather than inspired players. A return to the Italian national team remains a goal for Berardi, who hopes to continue playing at a high level for another four or five years.
