Lucas Bergvall has communicated to Tottenham Hotspur his wish to pursue a transfer this summer, according to The Athletic. The 20-year-old midfielder joined Spurs from Djurgarden in 2024 and has made 78 appearances for the club, scoring twice.
Bergvall was a prominent player under former manager Ange Postecoglou, playing a key role in their 2025 Europa League triumph, ending a 17-year trophy drought for the club. However, following Postecoglou’s departure in June 2025, Bergvall’s playing time diminished under subsequent managers Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor, a situation compounded by an ankle injury that required surgery in January.
David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Bergvall, currently with the Swedish national team at the World Cup, has expressed his desire for a new challenge. Chelsea were previously linked with the player in February, with an initial enquiry reportedly rejected by Tottenham.
Chelsea are expected to back manager Xabi Alonso with significant investment in the summer transfer window, targeting a centre-back and a versatile attacker. Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix have both been identified as potential targets for the Stamford Bridge club, with Rogers valued at over €92m (£80m) and Lacroix also attracting interest.
Chelsea have already been active in the transfer market, recently selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for €60million (£52m), with the left-back signing a six-year contract with the Spanish giants. Tottenham, now under the management of Roberto De Zerbi, are also looking to strengthen their midfield options.
Spurs have seen a bid of approximately €92million (£80m) for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali rejected, as reported by BBC Sport, and also hold an interest in West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Fernandes, also linked with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to be available for €92m (£80m) after West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League last season, according to The Times.
