Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a second bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, after an initial offer of £75million was rejected, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs. The North London club are determined to secure the Italy international as a marquee signing this summer, despite competition from several other Premier League clubs.
Spurs have already added to their defensive options with the signings of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke, and manager Roberto De Zerbi has reportedly stressed the importance of bolstering the central midfield. Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan last year, is seen as a key target to achieve this, with the club willing to go as high as £85million plus potential add-ons to complete a deal.
Newcastle are reportedly seeking a total package of £100million for Tonali, including £85million upfront and a further £15million in performance-based add-ons. While the base fee is within Tottenham’s reach, the add-on structure could prove to be a sticking point in negotiations. Romano has cautioned Tottenham fans to remain patient, stating that a first bid is rarely accepted in deals of this magnitude and serves primarily to signal the club’s seriousness.
Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Tonali, but Tottenham are confident they can pull off a coup despite not being able to offer European football next season. The club’s transfer chiefs are working diligently to convince Tonali to choose Spurs, emphasizing the project under De Zerbi and the ambition to build a competitive squad. Other midfield targets, including Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, are being considered as alternatives, though Tottenham remain focused on securing Tonali’s signature.
