Borussia Dortmund are reportedly considering a move for Real Madrid forward Gonzalo García, according to German publication BILD. The 22-year-old Spaniard is understood to be open to a transfer to the Bundesliga after struggling for minutes in the Spanish capital. Dortmund are said to be prepared to offer a fee in the region of €30 million, though Real Madrid are believed to value the player closer to €60 million.
García, an academy graduate, had hoped to cement his place in the first team after a standout performance at the FIFA Club World Cup, where he finished as the tournament's top scorer. His prospects, however, diminished following the departure of former coach Xabi Alonso, who had given him his initial opportunities. Under the current regime, García has been deemed surplus to requirements, making just 34 appearances this season and scoring six goals.
The reported interest from Dortmund adds a new dimension to García's potential exit. He has previously been linked with other Bundesliga sides, including Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart. Dortmund's pursuit indicates a search for attacking reinforcements, potentially as a long-term project given García's age. The significant gap between the clubs' valuations, however, presents a major obstacle to any deal.
Complicating negotiations further is García's contract situation. The striker only signed a long-term extension with Real Madrid last August, tying him to the club until 2030. This gives the Spanish giants a strong negotiating position, as they are under no immediate pressure to sell. For Dortmund, a deal would likely require a substantial increase in their initial offer or a structured payment plan to meet Madrid's demands.
For García, a move to Signal Iduna Park would offer a clearer path to regular first-team football, a crucial factor at this stage of his development. His limited output this season belies the potential he showed in youth ranks and in cup competitions. A transfer to the Bundesliga could provide the platform he needs to reignite his career, following a path trodden by other Spanish talents who have thrived in Germany.
The situation remains in its early stages, with no formal bid confirmed by either club. Should Dortmund formalize their interest, they will need to bridge a significant financial gap to convince Real Madrid to part with a player they recently committed to for the long term. The coming weeks will determine if Dortmund's interest escalates into a serious negotiation.
