Borussia Dortmund defender Niklas Süle has announced his intention to retire from professional football at the end of the current season, on June 30th. The 30-year-old revealed his decision on a podcast, bringing an end to a 13-year career spent with Hoffenheim, Bayern Munich, and Dortmund.
A key figure in Dortmund’s defense, Süle gained prominence for his strong performances, including a memorable goal-line clearance against Kylian Mbappé during a Champions League semi-final two years ago. Throughout his career, he has secured significant silverware, including a Champions League title with Bayern Munich in 2020, five Bundesliga titles, and a Club World Cup.
Süle explained that his decision stems from persistent injury problems. He stated he reached a firm conclusion after a match against Hoffenheim on April 18th, initially fearing a third anterior cruciate ligament rupture. While that specific diagnosis proved incorrect, Süle felt certain his body could no longer withstand the demands of professional football. The club released a statement where Süle expressed his gratitude to the Dortmund supporters, noting his and his family’s difficulty in contemplating their departure.
Having joined Dortmund in 2022, Süle became a regular starter when fit, contributing his physicality and aerial prowess to the team’s backline. Prior to his move to Dortmund, he spent five successful years with Bayern Munich, establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s top centre-backs. He began his professional career with Hoffenheim, quickly rising through the ranks to become a sought-after defender. Süle’s retirement marks the end of a distinguished career for a player who consistently performed at the highest level. His departure will leave a void in Dortmund’s squad, requiring the club to seek defensive reinforcements in the upcoming transfer windows.
