Brentford FC have submitted a formal offer of €40 million for 1. FC Köln forward Said El Mala, according to reports in Germany. The Premier League club’s bid includes an additional €5 million in achievable bonuses and a 15% sell-on clause, as reported by Bild.
- FC Köln managing director for sport Thomas Kessler confirmed on Tuesday that the club had received an offer for the 19-year-old, though he did not initially name Brentford as the interested party. Kessler indicated that the offer was substantial enough to warrant consideration, stating he was “open to talks”. Bild reports that Brentford have set a timeframe for negotiations, threatening to withdraw their bid if an agreement cannot be reached within a matter of days.
El Mala joined Köln from FC Viktoria Köln in January 2023 for a reported fee of €350,000. He has quickly established himself as a promising talent in the Bundesliga, making 25 appearances across all competitions last season and scoring three goals. While not a consistent starter, his pace and dribbling ability have drawn attention from clubs in England and elsewhere.
Brentford have been actively seeking attacking reinforcements during the transfer window, following a season where they relied heavily on Ivan Toney, who has since departed for Nottingham Forest. Manager Thomas Frank is looking to add depth and competition in forward positions, and El Mala fits the profile of a young, dynamic player with significant potential. Köln, meanwhile, may be tempted to cash in on a player whose value has increased dramatically in a short period, particularly given their own financial situation.
The potential transfer could provide Brentford with a long-term solution in attack, while also offering Köln a significant profit on a recent acquisition. If the deal is completed, El Mala will likely compete for a starting spot with existing Brentford forwards, adding another dimension to their attacking options.
