Brighton & Hove Albion have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the transfer of Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic in a deal worth £50 million, according to TEAMtalk. The transfer is expected to be completed following the conclusion of the World Cup, bringing an end to a protracted saga this summer.
Vuskovic reportedly made his preference for a move to Brighton clear to Tottenham several weeks ago, despite interest from numerous clubs across Europe. The 19-year-old was particularly drawn to the opportunity of working under Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler, whose reputation for developing young players was a key factor in his decision.
The agreement follows a series of offers and negotiations between the two clubs, with Brighton now poised to welcome one of Europe’s most highly-rated defensive prospects to the Amex Stadium. The move is anticipated to fill the void left by Jan Paul van Hecke, who recently joined Tottenham earlier in the summer transfer window.
TEAMtalk previously reported that Brighton’s pursuit of Vuskovic would not be affected by their agreement to sign Pascal Struijk from Leeds United, and this has now been confirmed. Club officials viewed both deals as separate necessities, acknowledging the need for multiple additions in central defence following Van Hecke’s departure. Vuskovic had long been identified as Brighton’s priority target in that position.
Brighton officials have expressed genuine excitement about securing Vuskovic, believing he possesses the potential to become a cornerstone of their defence for years to come. They cite his composure, physicality, and technical ability as qualities that could see him develop into one of Europe’s elite centre-backs.
For Tottenham, the agreement represents a resolution to a situation that had become challenging after Vuskovic communicated his desire to move elsewhere. While initially hoping to integrate the defender into Roberto De Zerbi’s squad, Spurs ultimately respected his wishes and accepted Brighton’s offer, which matched their valuation. The £50 million fee provides additional funds for De Zerbi to reshape the Tottenham squad.
Brighton’s acquisition of Vuskovic is seen as a significant statement of intent, further strengthening their squad following other summer additions. Hurzeler has now secured his primary defensive target, and the paperwork is expected to be finalised after the World Cup, with Vuskovic set to become a marquee signing for the club.
