Former Udinese goalkeeper Željko Brkić has advised the next Napoli manager to favour Vanja Milinković-Savić over Alex Meret, citing the former’s suitability for the modern game. Brkić shared his assessment during an interview on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli’s “Radio Goal” program.
Brkić acknowledged Napoli’s second-place finish in the recently concluded Serie A season as a valuable result, particularly given the dominance of champions Inter Milan. He suggested that surpassing that position in the league was a difficult ask, though improvements could have been made in the Champions League.
Speaking on Milinković-Savić’s performances, Brkić described them as “overall good,” noting his relatively low goals conceded ratio – approximately one per game – and his success in saving three penalties. He conceded there were moments of uncertainty, but maintained a positive overall assessment of the Serbian goalkeeper’s contribution.
Brkić highlighted the evolving role of the goalkeeper, noting the increasing demand for players comfortable with the ball at their feet. He stated that modern goalkeepers are now expected to participate actively in build-up play, completing 20 to 40 passes per match. Milinković-Savić, according to Brkić, possesses the necessary technical ability to thrive in this environment. He emphasized that top-level managers are now seeking goalkeepers who can not only make saves but also contribute to the team’s attacking transitions.
With Massimiliano Allegri expected to take the managerial role, Brkić believes his experience will be crucial in determining Napoli’s first-choice goalkeeper. He anticipates Allegri will assess both Milinković-Savić and Meret, considering their strengths and how they fit into his tactical approach. Brkić suggests the decision will hinge on the extent to which Allegri prioritizes a goalkeeper’s involvement in the team’s overall play, underlining the increasing importance of the position in modern football.
