Bundesliga Relegation Battle Intensifies as Seven Clubs Face Final Stretch
Seven Bundesliga clubs remain under significant threat of relegation with just four matchdays remaining in the season. According to an analysis by Bulinews, the battle to avoid the drop involves FC Heidenheim, VfL Wolfsburg, FC St. Pauli, 1. FC Köln, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach, with the fortunes of each varying dramatically based on form and fixture difficulty.
At the bottom of the table, Heidenheim face the most immediate peril. Sitting in 18th place with 19 points, Frank Schmidt's side must avoid defeat at home to 16th-placed St. Pauli this weekend to keep their survival hopes alive. A loss would confirm their immediate return to the 2. Bundesliga, given their final game is against Bayern Munich. Their survival threat is assessed at 95%.
Directly above them, VfL Wolfsburg are on 24 points and are focusing on securing 16th place and the relegation playoff spot. The Wolves, who survived via the playoff in 2017 and 2018, have shown slight improvement but face a difficult run-in including matches against Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Their fate could hinge on a final-day clash with St. Pauli, and their relegation threat is currently estimated at 60%.
St. Pauli occupy that crucial 16th position with 26 points. Their primary issue has been a severe lack of goals, with only 26 scored all season—the lowest tally in the league. While their remaining fixtures, including a trip to Heidenheim and a home game against Mainz, appear favourable, their inability to convert chances leaves them vulnerable. They are five points from direct safety, making the playoff their most likely outcome, with a threat level of 45%.
A cluster of four clubs sit on 31 points, five points clear of the playoff place. Among them, 1. FC Köln appear the safest due to their superior attacking output, led by Jakub Kaminski and Saïd El Mala, despite the injury loss of striker Ragnar Ache. Their relegation threat is rated at just 10%.
Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen, however, face more challenging paths. Hamburg do not play any side in the bottom six in their final four games, with all opponents currently in the top eight, contributing to a threat level of 25%. Werder Bremen, buoyed by a recent derby win over Hamburg, have a critical home fixture against Augsburg but are otherwise surrounded by tough matches, leaving them with a similar 25% threat.
Borussia Mönchengladbach, also on 31 points, possess the leakiest defence of the group, having conceded 50 goals. Their mission starts with a crucial away match at Wolfsburg this weekend, ahead of facing Dortmund, Augsburg, and Hoffenheim. Their threat is assessed at 15%. The final weeks of the season promise a tense climax as these seven clubs fight for their Bundesliga status.
