Burnley are reportedly interested in signing Kojo Peprah Oppong from OGC Nice, according to L’Équipe. The Championship club face competition from Turkish side Trabzonspor and an unnamed Ligue 1 team for the 22-year-old Ghanaian centre-back. Nice initially signed Oppong from Norrköping in Sweden for a fee of €2.7 million last summer.
Oppong quickly became a key player for Nice despite not being initially expected to feature so prominently. A series of injuries within the Nice squad allowed him to secure a regular starting position, making 40 appearances in all competitions. His performances earned him a call-up to the Ghana national team, where he featured twice at the recent World Cup in Qatar.
His increased playing time and international recognition have significantly increased Oppong’s market value. Nice could potentially receive between €10 and €15 million for the defender should they choose to sell during this transfer window. The club is under pressure to generate approximately €70 million through player sales and wage reductions to balance their finances.
Despite ideally wanting to retain Oppong, who is under contract until 2029, Nice’s financial situation may force them to consider offers. Sporting director Roger Ricort faces a significant challenge to meet the club’s financial targets within the remaining five weeks of the transfer window. Burnley’s interest suggests they see Oppong as a potential reinforcement ahead of their return to the Premier League, while Trabzonspor are also looking to strengthen their defensive options.
