Jean-Pierre Caillot, president of Stade de Reims, has been elected president of the Ligue 2 collective, defeating Laval president Laurent Lairy in a vote held on Monday.
Caillot secured 12 votes to Lairy’s 5, with one abstention, according to reports from the Stade de Reims official website. He succeeds Bernard Joannin, the former president of Amiens, who resigned from his position at the end of last season following Amiens’ relegation to Ligue 3.
The election marks the beginning of a new role for Caillot, who has been president of Stade de Reims for 24 years. In a statement released by the club, Caillot expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by the Ligue 2 presidents. He emphasized his commitment to serving the collective interest of the league and leveraging his experience gained over two decades with Reims and previous roles within footballing institutions.
Caillot’s appointment comes at a time of ongoing development within Ligue 2, as clubs strive to enhance the league’s competitiveness and financial stability. His extensive experience in club management is expected to be valuable in navigating these challenges and fostering collaboration among the member clubs. The election of a prominent Ligue 1 figure to lead the Ligue 2 collective suggests a desire for closer alignment between the two divisions.
This move represents a significant step in Caillot’s career, extending his influence beyond the confines of Stade de Reims and into the broader landscape of French professional football. His leadership will be closely watched as he seeks to shape the future direction of Ligue 2.
