Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed the signing of Caio Henrique from AS Monaco, bringing an end to the Brazilian’s six-year spell with the Ligue 1 club. The transfer was officially announced by Ajax on Tuesday, with both clubs reaching an agreement for the permanent move. According to the Dutch club’s statement, the parties “reached an agreement regarding the transfer” of the player.
Reports from mid-June, as indicated by L’ÉQUIPE, suggested the deal would be worth €10 million plus €3 million in add-ons, with a 25% sell-on clause included. Henrique, a 28-year-old left-back, made 211 appearances for Monaco after joining the club in 2018.
Ajax’s technical director, Jordi Cruyff, stated the club had been “working very hard for some time” to secure Henrique’s signature. Cruyff also highlighted the player’s “great experience and leadership qualities,” believing he will have an “immediate impact” on the team. Henrique’s arrival bolsters Ajax’s options at left-back ahead of the new Eredivisie season.
Monaco also acknowledged Henrique’s departure, publishing a video montage of his best moments with the club on their social media channels. The club noted that Henrique is their second-highest assist provider in the 21st century, having registered 39 assists in his 211 appearances – trailing only Alexandre Golovine who has 43.
“Thank you Caio Henrique for these six seasons, your commitment and all the moments experienced in red and white,” AS Monaco wrote in their post. “Good luck for the rest of your career.” Henrique featured in 22 Ligue 1 matches, 9 Champions League games, and 3 Coupe de France matches for Monaco this past season. His departure creates space within Monaco’s squad as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
This move offers Henrique a new challenge in the Eredivisie and a chance to contribute to Ajax’s ambition of dominating Dutch football.
