Liverpool’s pursuit of Eduardo Camavinga has hit a snag, with the Real Madrid midfielder reportedly reversing his decision to seek a move this summer. According to Mundo Deportivo, Camavinga has informed his agents to halt discussions with potential suitors, including Liverpool, as he is now determined to remain at the Bernabeu.
This development comes after reports in May indicated Camavinga had approved a summer transfer and was actively seeking a new elite club. Liverpool had recently made contact with Real Madrid to explore the possibility of signing the 23-year-old, who is valued between €50-58 million (£43-50 million) by the Spanish club. Manchester United were also previously linked with a move for the Frenchman.
Camavinga featured in 43 matches for Real Madrid across all competitions last season, showcasing his versatility in multiple positions including central midfield, left-back, and left wing. However, his season was marred by a costly red card in the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich, which contributed to Madrid’s elimination. The dismissal, resulting from two yellow cards, occurred late in the second leg, with Bayern ultimately winning the tie 6-4 on aggregate.
Despite Camavinga’s desire to stay, his future at Real Madrid remains uncertain with the return of Jose Mourinho as manager. Mourinho is reportedly prioritizing the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea as part of a midfield overhaul, potentially leading to Camavinga being deemed surplus to requirements. To facilitate a move for Fernandez, Madrid may need to generate funds through player sales, and Camavinga could be among those sacrificed. There is also reported interest from Manchester United in Aurelien Tchouameni, adding further complexity to Madrid’s midfield plans. Mourinho is also said to be interested in Manchester City’s Rodri.
While Camavinga is currently focused on securing his place in Madrid, Mourinho’s plans could ultimately force his departure, despite his current intentions. The situation highlights the shifting dynamics within the Real Madrid squad as Mourinho begins to reshape the team in his image.
