AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale convened a meeting in London with key club figures to discuss the Serie A side’s future, according to reports in the Italian press. Attendees included CEO Giorgio Furlani, advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic, board member Massimo Calvelli, and chief brand officer Francesca Montini.
The meeting focused on the team’s disappointing season, which risks ending without Champions League qualification, and a potential restructuring of the club’s leadership. Cardinale is reportedly evaluating changes to the club’s structure following perceived underperformance in the transfer market in recent years.
It is anticipated that sporting director Ricky Tare will depart, but further changes are possible, including the role of CEO Furlani. Furlani was instrumental during the period when Elliott Management owned the club, but Cardinale is now assessing the overall structure following the repayment of a vendor loan to Elliott. The founder of RedBird Capital Partners has begun a restructuring process and will make decisions on the new organization after the end of the season.
Cardinale reportedly holds Massimo Calvelli in high regard, suggesting the former ATP administrator could take on a prominent role in the administrative side of the club. The extent of Ibrahimovic’s influence is also under consideration, with the Swedish legend actively involved in meetings with staff and other club personnel. Ibrahimovic is set to work as a pundit for Fox Sports during the World Cup.
The discussion centered around whether Ibrahimovic will retain control over technical director Moncada and Kirovski, who lead the ‘Milan Futuro’ project, or if new personnel will be brought in across both the economic and sporting departments. Cardinale is keen to make swift decisions, aiming for the club to be fully operational immediately after the Serie A season concludes on May 24th.
