Milan owner Gerry Cardinale is reportedly dissatisfied with the club’s recent form and the atmosphere surrounding the team following protests at San Siro, according to reports in Italy. The club’s failure to secure a Champions League spot could trigger significant changes within the organization, potentially impacting management, the coaching staff, and future strategies.
Cardinale had envisioned a different trajectory for the 2025-26 season, and despite currently holding more points than at the same stage last year, he is unhappy with the team’s performance over the past two months. The recent fan protests have further fueled his discontent. Cardinale has consistently expressed his desire for success and has invested heavily in the club, with plans for continued investment.
The project launched last May, which initially saw Milan top the Serie A table and secure a Champions League position, now appears to be faltering. This raises concerns about potential upheaval, including the appointment of new directors and a new head coach, as well as the financial implications of missing out on Champions League revenue. While Milan will compete in European competition next season, the difference between participating in the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League is substantial.
Despite the current difficulties, the club’s immediate focus is on unity and securing a top-four finish. Two victories in their remaining matches against Genoa and Cagliari would see Milan return to the Champions League qualification spots. However, after the conclusion of the Serie A season on May 24th, a comprehensive evaluation of the season will take place, addressing both successes and shortcomings. A key area of scrutiny will be the transfer activity, which has largely been deemed unsuccessful, with only Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot making a significant impact among the new arrivals.
Chief executive Furlani, sporting director Tare, technical director Moncada, and advisor Ibrahimovic will all face scrutiny for their roles in the season’s performance. The club’s future direction will depend on who remains in their positions and the decision regarding head coach Stefano Pioli. A failure to qualify for the Champions League could result in a complete overhaul of the club’s leadership structure.
