Bayer Leverkusen have announced the appointment of Carles Martínez Novell as their new head coach, succeeding Kasper Hjulmand after one season in the role. The 42-year-old Spaniard has signed a two-year contract with the Bundesliga club, arriving on a free transfer from French side Toulouse.
Martínez’s arrival marks a new chapter for Leverkusen, who reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal and the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League under Hjulmand, but ultimately fell short of fully achieving their sporting objectives. The club’s chairman of the shareholders’ committee, Werner Wenning, thanked Hjulmand for his commitment and wished him well for the future, while expressing excitement about securing Martínez.
Leverkusen’s managing director for sport, Simon Rolfes, highlighted Martínez’s track record of developing young players and building a cohesive team at Toulouse. Rolfes noted the coach’s experience within the famed FC Barcelona youth academy as a valuable asset, adding that Martínez possesses clear principles and a modern playing philosophy. The club believes he will provide the necessary impetus for their future sporting ambitions.
Martínez spent three years at Toulouse, where he oversaw a period of growth and development for the Ligue 1 club. Prior to his time in France, he honed his coaching skills within the Barcelona system, gaining experience in youth development. His appointment represents a shift in direction for Leverkusen, who are clearly prioritizing a coach capable of nurturing talent and implementing a progressive style of play.
The move positions Leverkusen to build on their recent European performances, aiming for greater consistency in the Bundesliga and a deeper run in continental competitions. Martínez will be tasked with integrating his philosophy and maximizing the potential of Leverkusen’s squad as they look to establish themselves as a consistent force in German football.
