Michael Carrick is expected to request three major signings this summer as he prepares to take on the permanent managerial role at Manchester United, according to former assistant manager Rene Meulensteen. The club confirmed an initial two-year deal with Carrick following his successful interim period, where he secured Champions League qualification with 11 wins in 16 matches – a 68.75% win percentage.
Meulensteen, who worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, believes Carrick understood the expectation to challenge for the Premier League title and trophies from the outset. He suggests Carrick would have presented co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe with a list of priority targets in exchange for accepting the position. “Michael’s response possibly would be okay, I’m happy to do that, but I need X, Y and Z to make this happen – three big signings who can really deliver,” Meulensteen told TEAMtalk.
Carrick’s success as interim manager has quickly established him as the clear choice for the permanent role, ending a period of instability at the club. He took over on a temporary basis and swiftly improved the team’s form, addressing issues that had plagued previous managers. The appointment signifies a shift towards a more stable and focused approach at United.
Meulensteen, who observed Carrick’s playing career closely, always believed the midfielder possessed the qualities to become a successful manager. He noted Carrick’s keen observation skills during training and his proactive approach to learning the game. “Michael was, I’ve always felt, that he could end up staying in football in whatever capacity,” Meulensteen said.
Manchester United are reportedly compiling a list of potential midfield recruits, with the position identified as a key area for improvement. The club has reportedly drawn up a list of 13 potential options, with a clear hierarchy of targets in place. Meulensteen has urged Carrick to pursue an ‘intelligent’ midfielder valued at around £100 million to bolster the team’s options. The successful appointment of Carrick and potential new signings are expected to signal a new era of ambition for Manchester United.
