Chelsea’s pursuit of a new centre-back has received a boost as Maxence Lacroix is reportedly hesitant to extend his contract with Crystal Palace, according to the Daily Mail. The Blues are aiming to bolster their squad under new manager Xabi Alonso this summer, with a central defender and versatile attacker identified as key priorities, as reported by The Athletic.
Chelsea had been heavily linked with a move for Jan Paul van Hecke of Brighton and Hove Albion, valued at approximately €81 million (£70m) according to The Telegraph. However, Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as strong competitors for the Dutch defender, with The Athletic reporting that Spurs have already had two offers rejected by Brighton. Van Hecke is reportedly keen to reunite with his former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, now at Tottenham.
Lacroix has also been a subject of Chelsea’s interest, with French publication RMC Sport suggesting a valuation of at least €40 million (£35m) for the France international. The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea have now formally added Lacroix to their shortlist after learning of his openness to exploring alternative options following the 2026 World Cup.
Lacroix joined Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 and has since made 98 appearances for the club, contributing four goals and playing a key role in their 2025 FA Cup and 2026 UEFA Conference League triumphs. His performances earned him a place in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the current World Cup tournament.
Meanwhile, Van Hecke, who has just one year remaining on his Brighton contract, has expressed a desire for clarity regarding his future. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Netherlands’ match against Japan, he stated he wants to resolve his situation after the World Cup, but ideally would like clarity before the tournament concludes. He admitted to already having some clarity, but is focused on performing well at the World Cup for now. The pursuit of both players highlights Chelsea’s intent to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season, with the outcome potentially shaping their defensive stability for years to come.
