Chelsea have identified Sporting defender Maxi Araujo as a ‘priority target’ to bolster their left-back options following Marc Cucurella’s recent transfer to Real Madrid, according to Portuguese outlet Record. Enquiries have already been made through the player’s representatives, though no formal contact has yet been made with Sporting.
Cucurella completed a €60 million move to Madrid earlier this week, prompting Chelsea to assess potential replacements. While Valentin Barco is expected to join from affiliate club Strasbourg, capable of playing in both midfield and defence, and Jorrel Hato may see increased game time, Araujo has emerged as a leading candidate.
Araujo, 26, caught the eye with a late equaliser for Uruguay against Saudi Arabia at the 2026 World Cup on Monday, coinciding with Cucurella’s move to Spain. He joined Sporting from Mexican side Toluca in 2024 and has since established himself as an attacking threat, contributing nine goal contributions in 29 league matches last season.
Chelsea have reportedly been long-term admirers of Araujo, viewing him as a suitable option for the left wing-back role should incoming manager Xabi Alonso maintain his preferred tactical system. Other Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal, have previously expressed interest in the Uruguayan international.
Sporting are believed to value Araujo at a minimum of €50 million and are attempting to secure his future by offering him a new contract that would make him one of the club’s highest earners. Araujo still has three years remaining on his current deal. Chelsea’s approach to the summer transfer window will largely depend on Alonso’s plans upon his arrival in July, though the club are currently remaining calm despite speculation surrounding a potential sale of Enzo Fernandez.
