Chelsea have set a price tag of £75 million (€87m) for defender Malo Gusto in an attempt to ward off interest from Manchester City, according to reports. The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to reunite with incoming City manager Enzo Maresca, with whom he previously worked at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are simultaneously nearing the completion of a €60 million deal to sign wing-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta. This acquisition is expected to impact Gusto’s playing time, prompting the Frenchman to consider his options, and has led to exploratory talks with several clubs including City, as reported by the BBC.
Gusto joined Chelsea in 2023 for a fee of €30 million and has become a regular fixture in the team, often deputising for captain Reece James at right-back during James’ injury absences. However, with James anticipated to return to full fitness and the arrival of Palestra, Gusto’s opportunities could be limited.
The club’s incoming manager, Xabi Alonso, is known to favour a wing-back system, and Palestra is believed to be a better fit for that tactical approach. Chelsea are also seeking a replacement for left-back Marc Cucurella, further potentially reducing Gusto’s minutes next season despite his 34 league appearances last year.
While Gusto’s performances have shown inconsistency, Chelsea currently have no desire to sell him and still view him as a valuable first-team member. His current contract with the club runs until 2030. However, his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is currently around €45.9m, and a sale for £75m would represent a significant profit for the Blues.
Maresca’s official appointment at Manchester City will likely determine the extent of their pursuit of Gusto. Despite not currently being considered a ‘leading candidate’ for the right-back position, City are in the market for reinforcements in that area. Several other clubs are also reportedly interested, suggesting Chelsea may struggle to retain Gusto even with their high asking price.
