Chelsea have held encouraging initial discussions with Xabi Alonso regarding their vacant managerial position, according to transfer expert Nicolo Schira. The talks, described as “positive” by Schira on X, suggest Alonso is open to considering a long-term project at Stamford Bridge.
This development comes after Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior last month, continuing a pattern of managerial changes since the arrival of BlueCo as the club’s new ownership group. Four managers have been dismissed under the new ownership, raising questions about the stability of the role, a factor that may influence Alonso’s decision.
Alonso recently departed Real Madrid by mutual consent and previously achieved significant success with Bayer Leverkusen, leading them to an undefeated 2023-24 Bundesliga title – a historic first for the club. He won 24 of his 34 matches in charge of Los Blancos, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
Chelsea are considering several other candidates alongside Alonso, including Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, and Cesc Fabregas. Former Blues defender Filipe Luis and Barcelona legend Xavi have also been linked with the position, as has Frank Lampard following his success with Coventry City. Currently, Alonso is the bookmakers’ favourite for the role, with odds of approximately 2/1.
The potential appointment of Alonso is complicated by uncertainty surrounding the future of Arne Slot at Liverpool, Alonso’s former club. However, the Spaniard has reportedly indicated his willingness to commit to a long-term project with Chelsea, should he choose to accept the offer. The club is currently reflecting on the outcome of these initial talks and assessing their options before making a final decision. A swift appointment is anticipated as the club prepares for a crucial summer transfer window.
