Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford on loan this summer, according to reports from TEAMtalk and journalist Simon Phillips. The Blues will not pursue a permanent deal for the England international, citing Rashford’s substantial £325,000 per week wages as a deterrent.
This development comes after Barcelona decided against exercising their option to buy Rashford following a season-long loan spell at the club, where he helped Hansi Flick’s side win LaLiga. While Barcelona remain open to another loan deal, Manchester United are actively seeking to move Rashford on permanently and have ‘instructed intermediaries’ to explore potential moves.
Rashford’s form had been inconsistent at Old Trafford prior to the loan, prompting the club to consider options beyond retaining him. He rediscovered some of his previous form during his time in Spain, contributing to Barcelona’s title-winning campaign. The 26-year-old has been a Manchester United player since 2015, progressing through the academy and becoming a key member of the first team, though his recent performances have drawn criticism.
Chelsea’s interest aligns with their strategy of seeking value in the transfer market, and a loan deal would allow them to bolster their attacking options without a significant financial outlay. Former Chelsea player Joe Cole recently expressed his belief that Rashford would be a valuable addition to the squad, though acknowledging the wage considerations. The potential move could offer Rashford a fresh start and an opportunity to reignite his career under a new manager.
