Chelsea have submitted an opening offer of €9 million for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria, according to reports emerging from Spain. The Blues are looking to strengthen their left-back options following the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and are aiming to complete a deal before the start of the 2026-27 season.
The 28-year-old Chavarria is a versatile player, capable of featuring at both left-back and left wing-back. Last season, he made 44 appearances for Rayo Vallecano across all competitions, including their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Europa Conference League final. He has become a key figure for the Spanish side since joining in 2022.
Chelsea are anticipating that Jorrel Hato will step into a starting role following Cucurella’s departure, but the club are keen to secure Chavarria as a reliable backup option. Fabrizio Romano and The Athletic have confirmed that discussions between the two clubs are currently underway, with Chelsea pushing for a swift resolution. Mundo Deportivo reports the initial €9 million bid has been lodged by the London club.
Rayo Vallecano have reportedly rejected the opening offer, seeking a higher fee for the defender. However, negotiations are expected to progress in the coming days as Chelsea continue their pursuit. The Spanish club will likely be keen to maximize their return for a player who has consistently performed at a high level.
Beyond Chavarria, Chelsea are also nearing the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta, with the Italy international currently in London undergoing a medical ahead of a €55 million transfer. This move could potentially impact the future of Malo Gusto at Stamford Bridge. Additionally, the club are interested in Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix as Xabi Alonso looks to rebuild the defensive line after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. In attack, Morgan Rogers remains a target, though Arsenal are also pursuing the England international, and a move to the Emirates Stadium is currently considered more probable.
