Chelsea are set to begin discussions regarding a contract extension for young striker Shumaira Mheuka as early as this summer, despite the player potentially being loaned out to gain senior experience. The 18-year-old has impressed for Chelsea’s academy sides this season, registering 25 goals and four assists in 30 appearances, topping the Premier League 2 scoring charts with 18 goals.
Mheuka has also demonstrated leadership qualities, frequently captaining Chelsea’s U21 team despite being younger than many of his teammates. He has made three first-team appearances for the club this season, featuring against Lincoln City, Arsenal, and Hull City, but has yet to be named in a Premier League matchday squad. This limited involvement comes despite the struggles of fellow striker Liam Delap since his arrival at Chelsea.
Last season, Mheuka made five senior appearances, including a start against FC Copenhagen in the Europa Conference League, but has found it difficult to break into the first team consistently. His current contract with Chelsea is set to expire in 2027, though the club holds an option to extend it by a further year. According to The Athletic, both Chelsea and Mheuka’s representatives are “relaxed” about the situation and are keen to explore a long-term extension.
While a contract extension is on the table, Chelsea are also considering a loan move for Mheuka this summer. The club believes that regular senior football will be crucial for his development, with the aim of him returning to challenge for a first-team place in the 2027-28 season. Potential destinations include clubs in League One or the Championship, where he would likely receive consistent playing time. Mheuka is also the all-time leading goalscorer for England’s U19 team, having scored 16 goals in 23 caps. A loan move was considered in January, but Chelsea opted to keep him to maintain his momentum within the academy system. His development will be crucial as Chelsea continue to evaluate their forward options.
