Chelsea have significantly reduced the size of their playing squad to 38 players during the current mid-season transfer window, according to reports in France. This marks a substantial decrease from the 58 players under contract at the start of the 2024-2025 season.
Despite the reduction, Chelsea still maintains the largest squad in the Premier League, marginally ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s 37 players, while the league average stands at 29.4. The change in approach suggests owner Todd Boehly is, at least temporarily, curtailing the extensive spending that has characterised his tenure.
The club faces a bottleneck in several positions, particularly in goal where five players are competing for limited opportunities. Several players are reportedly unlikely to feature in matchday squads. The forward line also boasts four players, indicating a surplus of options across multiple positions.
Chelsea are also expected to add Dastan Satpaev to their ranks, further complicating the squad size issue. The club will not participate in any European competition this season and is limited to registering only 25 players for Premier League matches, intensifying the need to offload players.
Recent reports indicate that Everton have agreed to a deal worth over 20 million euros for a young Chelsea player, though the player’s identity has not been disclosed. Chelsea recently completed the signing of Morgan Rogers for a reported record fee. The club has also been linked with interest in Maxence Lacroix, a defender currently playing in a top Premier League side. The reduction in squad size is intended to create a more streamlined and competitive environment within the team, and could potentially facilitate further incoming transfers.
