Chelsea have significantly reduced the size of their squad to 38 players during the current mid-season transfer window, according to reports in France. This represents a substantial decrease from the 58 players under contract at the start of the 2024-2025 season.
The reduction comes as Chelsea navigate Premier League regulations limiting squad sizes to 25 players for league registration, and the absence of European competition this season. Despite the trimming, Chelsea still boasts one of the largest squads in the Premier League, exceeding Tottenham Hotspur’s 37 players, while the league average stands at 29.4.
The club, under the ownership of Todd Boehly, appears to have paused its extensive spending, at least temporarily. The sheer number of players at Stamford Bridge has created competition for places across the pitch, particularly in goalkeeping where five players are vying for a single spot. Several players are reportedly unlikely to feature in matchday squads.
Chelsea currently have four senior forwards and a surplus of options in multiple positions, with Dastan Satpaev expected to join the club. The club are now focused on finding suitable destinations for players who do not feature in manager Mauricio Pochettino’s plans. The situation is further complicated by the Premier League’s squad restrictions, adding urgency to the need for departures.
Recent reports indicate that Everton have agreed to a deal worth over 20 million euros for a young player from Chelsea, though the player’s identity has not been officially confirmed. Elsewhere, the club has been linked with a move for Morgan Rogers, reportedly for a record fee. The streamlining of the squad is intended to create a more focused and competitive environment, and to comply with league regulations.
