Chelsea have no plans to sell forward Joao Pedro to Barcelona this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Brazil international has been a standout performer for the Blues in a challenging season, attracting attention from Hansi Flick’s Barcelona as they seek a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Pedro has enjoyed a prolific debut season at Stamford Bridge, scoring 23 goals and providing nine assists in 51 appearances since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion last July. Barcelona identified him as a potential alternative to their primary target, Julian Alvarez, but Chelsea are resolute in their stance.
The 24-year-old’s contract with Chelsea does not expire until 2033, providing the club with significant leverage in negotiations. Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel that Chelsea view Pedro as “a crucial part of the project,” making a sale “complicated” after a difficult season where he was one of the few consistent performers.
Romano added that Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, has long been an admirer of Pedro, dating back to his time at Brighton. Despite Barcelona’s interest, Chelsea’s firm position suggests the Brazilian will remain at Stamford Bridge for the 2026-27 season. This is particularly important given the struggles of his understudy, Lia Delap, who has failed to make a significant impact since arriving from Ipswich Town.
Chelsea may consider selling Nicolas Jackson instead, despite Delap’s desire to prove himself. With Emmanuel Emegha also set to join, Chelsea’s striker options would consist of Pedro, Delap, Marc Guiu, and Emegha. Losing Pedro would be a significant blow given the relative inexperience of the other three forwards. His continued presence provides stability and a proven goalscoring threat for the club.
