Chelsea have agreed scholarship terms with highly-rated academy prospect Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. The 16-year-old midfielder has signed a deal with the Blues, preemptively warding off interest from several top clubs across Europe.
Nicoll-Jazuli has already participated in training sessions with Chelsea’s first team and reportedly turned down offers from foreign clubs to remain at Stamford Bridge. He is expected to sign a professional contract with the club when he reaches the age of 17 in January 2027, a strategy similar to Arsenal’s approach with Max Dowman last year.
Last season, the teenager made 35 appearances for Chelsea’s youth sides, registering two goals and six assists while playing in various midfield positions. The club were particularly keen to secure his future, having seen several promising academy players, including Jamal Musiala, Rio Ngumoha, and Ryan McAidoo, depart before signing professional terms.
Cole Palmer publicly praised Nicoll-Jazuli, describing him as a “baller” after the youngster became the youngest player to feature for Chelsea in the UEFA Youth League against Benfica. He has also represented England at youth levels, scoring for the U16s against Denmark in March, mirroring Jude Bellingham’s progression by playing above his age group for the Young Lions.
Comparisons to Bellingham have been drawn due to Nicoll-Jazuli’s style of play as an attacking midfielder. He made six appearances for Chelsea’s U21 side last term and is expected to feature prominently for the team next season. Born in Sydney, he is also eligible to represent Australia and France internationally.
Nicoll-Jazuli played a key role in Chelsea’s U18 Premier League title win, providing two assists in a 5-1 victory over Manchester City. He currently has six caps for England’s U17 team. Securing Nicoll-Jazuli’s scholarship signifies Chelsea’s commitment to developing young talent and building a strong future for the club.
